Canteras takes its name from the quarries that produced tabaire, a sandstone used in many buildings of Roman Carthago Nova. Today the quarry is protected as a Site of Cultural Interest.
The district brings together six settlements: Canteras, Los Patojos, Tentegorra, Los Garcías, Los Díaz de Canteras and La Algameca Chica. There are early-20th-century village houses, villas and newer developments, with Mount Roldán and the Sierra de la Muela as a backdrop.

The stone for Roman Cartagena came from here. Today it is a protected Site of Cultural Interest.
