What it is like to live in Barrio de la Concepción
The neighbourhood grew in the 18th century with the building of the Naval Arsenal and was settled mainly by workmen and craftsmen. Its official name was Población de la Purísima Concepción y San Miguel, although in Cartagena people called it Quitapellejos, a nickname the town council went as far as fining in 1760.
It sits on the eastern slope of Mount Atalaya, separated from San Antonio Abad and the Arsenal by the Benipila watercourse, and borders the Old Town and El Ensanche. It has streets of low houses, blocks of flats and, further up, newer developments with views.
La Atalaya castle
Built between 1766 and 1777 to defend the Naval Arsenal. From up there you can see the whole city and the port.
The Concepción church
Built in 1884. The neighbourhood festivities revolve around it every 8 December.
La Conciliación
A group of 163 Modernist-style homes by Víctor Beltrí, each with a front garden.
The centre next door
The Old Town and El Ensanche border the neighbourhood: you can walk there.
