El Ensanche was born out of the 1896 expansion plan, when Cartagena outgrew its walls and spread north over the old Almarjal. That is why its streets are wider than in the Old Town. Its first building was the Fábrica de la Luz power station, from 1900, which still stands.
Today it is the area of big flats: blocks with a lift and parking, some with a concierge, a short walk from the centre. Paseo de Alfonso XIII and Plaza de España are its backbone, with shops, schools and services within a few blocks.
